The Butterfly Effect

...d would experience. These are the main events that the chain reactions focus upon. Without these ever happening, Evan may not have had to have been the hero that kept on trying to save the day. Evan blacks out the majority of all these events because they are so painful emotionally and physically. When he first does this the viewer will most likely be confused, as I was when I first saw the movie. As the movie continues though, the blackouts become easier to understand as well as an important part to the movie. When they were seven, Evan learns that Kayleigh and Tommy’s father is a pedophile, and he and Kayleigh were forced to participate in a project of his. This later caused Kayleigh’s (Amy Smart) suicide. Evan (Ashton Kutcher) went back to his hometown to try to talk to her about it but I just upset her. His first attempt at changing history is going back in time to when he and Kayleigh were about to help her father with his sick movie. Evan talks back to her father saying that he should treat her as any man would treat his own daughter and that he should discipline his son more. That conversation led Evan to an almost perfect life with Kayleigh, but had a negative effect on Tommy. Evan and Tommy got into a fight and Evan ends up in jail for killing Tommy. This series of events was confusing and very brutal to watch but, these actions really grabbed the viewers’ attention and made them want to continue watching. Another baffling chain reaction begins with Evan going to a mental institution to visit his father, who Evan could possibly have the same brain condition as. While he is there his father tries to strangle him, then Evan witnesses his fathers death as the guards beat him off of Evan. When Evan is older and goes back to this memory, he tries to talk to his father. He wants to find out if he had any secrets about recalling memory. His father is no help and the scene ends the same way, with his father strangling him. At the end of this scene you kind of realize more of Evan’s condition and understand him better. At this point, although it is still confusing, these events helped the comprehension of this wonderfully fast-paced movie. An additional chain reaction occurred when the kids were thirteen and were involved in a fatal explosion. Tommy (Jesse James) talked Lenny (Kevin Schmidt) into placing a lit stick of dynamite in a mailbox. This prank turned deadly when a mother and baby came home and checked the mail just as the explosion occurred. From that point on Lenny was in shock and mentally scarred for life. This occurrence Evan desperately tried change. He tried to save to woman and baby, but Tommy got the glory and life altering experience while Evan was left with no arms. Although Lenny was not insane anymore, he was with Kayleigh, and that was heartbreaking for Evan to see. This made the movie watchers feel emotional for Evan, which made the viewers become more engulfed the movie. However, at this point when many flashbacks had already occurred, the viewers are still contemplating the puzzling movie sequence. The last main event happened when the group finally realized how many problems Tommy had when they walked up on him in a junkyard, with Evan’s (John Patrick Amedori) dog tied up in a bag with gasoline poured all over it. While they were there Tommy proceeded to brutally hit his sister and Evan with a huge piece of wood. His reasoning was that he was...
