Grant once stated "Leave the matter of religion to the family altar, the church, and the private school, supported entirely by private contributions. Keep the church and the State forever separate” (“Help”2) this statement shows what the Supreme Court wants to follow. Today the Supreme Court’s decision is misunderstood. “ Nothing in the 1962 or 1963 rulings makes it unlawful for public school students to pray or read the Bible (or any other religious book) on a voluntary basis during their free time. Later decisions were made even clearer; in1990 the high court ruled specifically that high school students may form clubs that meet during no instructional time to pray, read religious texts or discuss religious topics if other student groups are allowed to meet (“ Prayer”). After the Supreme Court made these rulings “ some people felt that many schools overreacted by stopping discussions about religion in the classroom altogether. For instance in the early 1990’s some teachers were afraid to tell children that the pilgrims had come here to escape religious persecution. In 1995 the department of education issued new guidelines “ Urging public schools to create a more friendly atmosphere for teaching and other activities that acknowledged various religious views”(Coeyman, Marjorie 2).
