Looking For Alibrandi as a Youth Film

Looking for Alibrandi is a film charged with emotional energy. Josephine Alibrandi, a spirited young women coming into the world tries to escape her claustrophobic family traditions, insisting that she can free herself and be the master of her own destiny as she begins a journey of self discovery. ...

Looking For Alibrandi is classified as a youth film, with many defining characteristics of this genre scattered throughout the narrative. The most important element of any youth film is that it contains themes and issues that are targeted at a youth audience, which this audience should then be able to relate to on a personal level. Looking for Alibrandi does this beautifully, and in a rather unique manner . There are many stereotypes about youth culture that drive a film of this genre, typically with themes such as sex, drugs and alcohol. Alibrandi steers clear of such negative associations, instead focussing on issues such as pressure in the final year of high school, arch rivals, love interests and family problems. It is refreshing to see a youth film with such a positive approach to teen life. ... The advantages of using such realistic themes in Alibrandi is that it is more likely to appeal to a much wider audience; how many teenagers can say that stress from school, or family issues were never a part of their life?

As well as these general themes, another defining characteristic of youth film is the concept of identity. Looking For Alibrandi is ultimately a film about finding yourself. ... The film revolves around Josie as she struggles to find her place in the world. ...

Alibrandi playfully dances around the multicultural aspects of the film, using tongue in cheek humour to address a culture which feels out of place in an Anglo dominated society. In the beginning of the film, the audience is introduced to the Alibrandi family through a traditional Italian food ritual called Tomato Day, which Josie lovingly dubs, “National Wog Day”.
