Raiders of the Lost Ark
.... Dr. Jones and his guide enter a dank and oppressively vast cave that contains several traps created by the ancient race which hides inside a famous hand held statue. Indy barely escapes such traps, but is cornered by native tribesmen. Served by Belloq, an old enemy who arrogantly makes off with the statue. He is then notified that a site that has an intercepted cable is the location of the Ark of the Covenant. This is a powerful chest that bears the Ten Commandments. The Nazis then can use this to destroy any enemy they want. Indy must recruit a former girlfriend and an old friend in Cairo to infiltrate the Nazi site and make off with the Ark. Along the way Indy gets involve in many things before the Nazi finally trap him and learn the full power of the Ark. This movie was made in 1980, but released in 1981. Video games, Mini Vans and talk shows became part of our lives during this decade. Hospital cost had risen and the nation lost many talented people to AIDS. By the end of the decade, AIDS had been spread to Black and Hispanic women. On the other hand our US Constitution celebrated it’s 200th birthday and Gone with the Wind turned 50. By the end of this decade we also would see an International change. This is when the Berlin Wall was removed. Personal computers were beginning to be bought by a large amount of Americans. They were in their homes, in the office and in the schools. In 1981 Columbia was launched and on January 28, 1986 the Challenger exploded after liftoff. It killed all seven astronauts on board and on of them was a school teacher. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial was inscribed with almost 58,000 names of American soldier who were either killed or missing in Vietnam.. The Prisons were overflowing and crime rates had tripled since the 60's. Nancy Regan campaign for “Just Say No” had great influence on the country. Families had also gone through a dramatic change during this time. We were seeing more divorce, more unmarried couples living together and also more single parent families. Women were earning college and advanced degrees. They would then marry and have fewer children. Education was become more popular to students graduating from high school. Freshman were now more interested in power, money and status. Business Management was the most popular major. The Liberals were against budget cuts and the rising of student costs. School districts started giving exams and exit exams as part of graduating for the Education majors. An attempt was made to get better quality teachers by raising their salaries slightly. Efforts to censor books such as The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, The Grapes of Wrath, and Catcher in the Rye had tripled in the 80's and were among the books that were banned in New York. Columbia University was one of the last all male Ivy League schools around and in 83 they began to accept women into the school. There were hostile takeovers and buyouts.
