...are similar but different in ways. They both have to deal with African Americans, but they have different settings. In the “Professor”(101), the setting is a town. In the “Big Meeting” (108), there is a church revival. They both use the same symbols ti convey their importance. It’s the idea of transferring. This is where you transfer your ideas to another individual so you want have to suffer. In the “Professor”, Dr. Brown wants to help out the African American community by providing education. By during this he wants $60,000. Now granted they can find money for this, but how would this help out the people that are less fortunate. He is thinking about himself and by doing so, others are suffering. By transferring, we will have to suffer to make him a better man. The “Big Meeting” the white people that came to watch felt the spirit on the revival being transferred to them. Hearing the way the preacher was re-enacting the death of Jesus was getting to them. So by feeling this way they left. In both this stories something is being transferred to another individual. This is a very effective and important symbol. Langston refers to racism in the form of segregation, as living in a different part of town than the white Americans. This was usually so the African- Americans were out of the white Americans’ view, as they were considered an eye sore. The African- Americans and the white Americans could be in the same area, but not be seen together. Langston Hughes refers to segregation among the African- American community.
