However, as screenwriter Charlie Kaufman and director Spike Jonze have recently demonstrated, with the film Adaptation, transforming the written word into the language of film is necessarily an open-ended process, involving the quotation and intersection of a number of different texts, not all of which may be recognizable as originary, or even literary. At the same time, examining carefully the changes made between literary source texts and their film treatments often provides an important critical framework for larger cultural analysis. This course posits that such an examination can prove especially useful for wider discussions of gender as they relate to the specific generic conventions of each medium.
