They drink just to feel good. Another reason is peer pressure. At high school parties there sometimes is alcohol. People drink and want others to drink. The pressure to say no is intense. Because saying no gains the label of “woosy” or “party-pooper” and less invitations to parties. But saying yes is being social and the “cool” kid that everyone wants to hang out with. It might seem dumb on paper but in reality its how life works. Advertisements play a crucial role in effecting a teenager’s drinking policy. Their ads are always targeted toward kids because the next generation is their future customers. It’s always the good-looking, young girl playing volleyball at the beach in her bikini that is drinking some beer. Or the handsome guy at the bar that drinks Samuel Adams. These corporations have proved that they will do anything to make more money. Another cause of drinking is example. If an individual has seen their father or mother drunk at a family party it sends a message. That is acceptable to drink and even get drunk. Drinking excessively without control is a sickness. It is a sickness that has many harmful effects. Excessive drinking causes brain damage. People lose brain cells every time they drink, so drinking a six-pack straight doesn’t help much. It can cause many cancers, including liver cancer. The liver protects the body when one is drinking but drinking a great deal over a period of time destroys it. Also drunk-driving is a common effect that only takes one drink. This obviously leads to car accidents, putting others in danger, and possible death. These are the physical effects. The emotional effects include a never-ending depression. A depression that is inescapable, which can lead to more drinking or suicide. In most cases a career, family, and a successful future goes out the window once one becomes an alcoholic. Alcoholics lose the respect of everyone they were acquainted with, even their own children. They are looked down on by society and are left by their wives and husbands. They walk the Earth alone and most people don’t care for them.
