...as problems with African Americans, although I don't believe he realizes it. An example of this is when Julian is thinking of ways to teach his mother a lesson he remembers of times when he tried being friendly with African Americans that looked like professors, ministers, or lawyers. It appears that Julian himself being a hypocrite in saying that his mother is prejudiced, when it seems he only wants to associate with influential African Americans. Julian has some major internal struggles that he seems to deal with all the time. One of Julian's primary struggles appears to be his unhappiness with his current place in life. It appears that Julian feels he has been cheated and has to do the best with what he was given, as he indicates that he has always come out ahead. Yet, Julian has been out of college for a year and does not have the writing job he desires and is still living off of his mom. Additionally, Julian feels upset when his mother feels guilty about buying something for herself and feels she could use the money for the gas bill. "I'm going back to the house and take this thing off and tomorrow I'm going to return it. I was out of my head. I can pay the gas bill with the seven fifty." "Shut up and enjoy it ," he muttered more depressed than ever. Julian is also bothered by the fact that he perhaps internally feels he has let his mother down after all that she has sacrificed for him and struggled. In conclusion I feel that the story had it's moments of highlights that are reflective of the conflict aforementioned.
