Janie finds her way

...confusing state into a goal that she will try to achieve. She gets a chance to achieve this by an offer from her next husband Joe Starks. Many have speculated about how she ran off with Joe while still legally married to Logan. This only shows that Janie had grown away from her child like, shy self, into a foreshadowing of her later independent self. Joe Starks was not her exact ”pear tree” image, but he was close to it. After all “Joe seemed like a … promise of new horizons.” With Joe though, power corrupted him, and he treated her like a trophy, showing her off to everyone. Janie learns here that she had come to conclusions too quickly and although she did love him, he wasn’t treating her with respect and did not fulfill her mentally or physically. She learns also though to defend herself and ideals. A very memorable part of the book is when Joe comments on how old she is and then she replies angrily with (non-Ebonics style ” Calling me old… At least this is all woman, every inch of me… when you pull down you britches, you look like the change of life!” She get s hit for this, but she learns that she will not take Jody’s oppression and threw his death broke free. After Joe’s death, you can see that Janie has blossomed in to an independent like woman. Her words hold power; her actions display a newfound wisdom. But she has never forgotten her goal to find that “pear tree” of hers and she finds this threw Tea Cake her third, and last, husband. With Tea Cake, you can see she has learned somewhat from her past mistakes. She takes he...
