Self-Assesment

This assignment was to take an introspective look at myself as a student and as a professional. I was to evaluate my personal learning style, assess my strengths and opportunities for growth, and to create an improvement plan based on this assessment. I believe this was the most beneficial assignment given since I began my studies at the University of Phoenix over two years ago. One of the first assignments in COM515, Managerial Communications, was to read articles from the Selected Readings web site. Several of the articles posted are concerned with learning styles and each identifies specific styles in its own way. I felt that assigning one particular style to me as an individual was very limiting, so I chose everything that fit my style and came up with an all-encompassing style called a Type III Active Visual Soloist. While I am label myself easily as a Type III Active Visual Soloist, defining that style is slightly more difficult. I really began my self-assessment with the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBIT) (http://www.gsu.edu/~dschjb/wwwmbti.html). The MBIT begins with extroversion vs. introversion. I found myself to be more introverted when it comes to learning than extroverted, but I am a very “hands-on” type of person, thus the “Active” in my self-proclaimed style. I believe my introversion contributes to my being a “Soloist” on the opposite side of that coin. I work much better by myself, but doing things rather than just reading about them. To define the “Visual” aspect of my learning style, I looked to the MBIT definitions of “Intuitive” and “Sensing” students. While I have always preferred to have all of the facts about a particular research subject before I make an educated evaluation, I also trust my instincts about certain things.
