Great Gatsby-American Dream
...and is narrated by Nick Carraway. He tells a tale of deep love and betrayal between his cousin, Daisy Buchanan, and his neighbor, Jay Gatsby. These two characters, years before, had fallen in love. However, Gatsby was not wealthy enough for Daisy, so she married a wealthy man named Tom after Gatsby left for the war. Upon Daisy’s betrayal, Gatsby dedicated his life to become wealthy and win Daisy back. Gatsby’s quest has no limit. He will do whatever it takes to make Daisy come back to him. He throws lavish parties and is extremely generous with his money. However, the only way Gatsby can become wealthy is by bootlegging. Tom easily picks this out when he states, “I picked him for a bootlegger the first time I saw him and I wasn’t far wrong.” (141) However, Gatsby is mindless of his crimes. The only thing he cares about is winning Daisy back. Gatsby is also a liar. His extravagant parties involve anybody that wants to come, whether they were invited or not. He lies to maintain his good name, become well liked, and be able to live near Daisy. He attempts to hide his bootlegging by lying about his past. “I’ll tell you God’s truth…I am the son of some wealthy people in the middle-west-all dead now. I was brought up in America but educated at Oxford because all my ancestors have been educated there for many years. It is a family tradition...
