People are for gene therapy is they are reassured that it is safe (Drlica 47-55). All of the resources that are found have no explanation of if the gene therapy is safe. Concluding the opinions of people with what if questions has no truth to them. Many rallies have taken place over the years, fighting for the stop of gene therapy. Most of their fights are on moral issues with this procedure. The main argument is that you were made a certain way for a specific reason. If you something is inherited you should have no control over it. God has made you have this genetic disease and he does not want doctors and scientists trying to reverse his works. Millions of people have stood behind this debate of putting a halt to this experimentation. The protesters’ other argument is that it is not proven to be safe. Nothing in this world is all the way completely for sure. They feel that by risking people to further the research on something that may never work will only hinder the genetic disease even more. Gene therapy has been tested many times and some of the results were positive but also were negative. The negative is where the therapy did work, worsened the disease, and the families lost thousands of dollars. The positives were that it helped to slow the disease, but did not completely cure it. On the other end of the spectrum gene therapy is a good thing. By furthering the research on gene therapy we will be able to stop genetic diseases before they start. Scientists know that there are many steps involved in making this procedure work. Scientists are working towards the day that it will be safe.
