The sin of my ingratitude even now was heavy on me… More is thy due is more than I can pay (I, iv, 17-24).” Even the king knows of Macbeth, in conclusion to this fact: it shows that Macbeth is a well known character. The great Scottish hero, Macbeth, is known by all, from a random soldier to the king, and has the potential to become a well known and valiant character, a “god.” In order for Macbeth to alleviate his ever-growing ambition, Macbeth is forced to slaughter Duncan as well as Banquo. To achieve the prophecies given to Macbeth, by the witches, Macbeth murders Duncan to become king. Macbeth divulged, “I go, and it is done; the bell invites me. Hear it not, Duncan, for it is a knell that summons thee to heaven, or to hell (II, I, 69-71).” This is Macbeth’s first tragic flaw, the killing of the king, Duncan; it is also Macbeth’s first time he chose to follow his ambition over righteousness. Soon after becoming king, Macbeth hires a couple of murderer’s to slay Banquo and his son, Fleance. As Macbeth told the murderers, “Know Banquo as your enemy… and in such bloody distance… who I myself struck down (III, I, 126-135).” Macbeth had hire murderers to slay, his best friend, Banquo in order to secure his position on the throne. Knowing the magnitude of his criminal actions, Macbeth, in the end, decides to slay Duncan and to have Banquo slain to further pursue his ambition. Not only has Macbeth killed his admiral kinsmen, he also commits preposterous acts in order to satisfy his self-esteem. The first thing Macbeth had done was the killing of the Macduff family (not including Macduff) in order to seek revenge against Macduff. Thus babbled by Macbeth, “The castle of Macduff I will surprise; seize upon Fife; give to the edge o’ the sword his wife, his babes, and all unfortunate souls (IV, I, 165-167).” Macbeth, becoming more and more irrational, chooses to murder Macduff’s family out of the pure spite he has towards Macduff.
