...uote is ironic because not only did the plane impact the water, but the events following the plane crash impacted Chuck Nolands life immensely. It was as if the quote was foreshadowing the rest of the film. The plane crash leads to the rest of the story and also prepares the audience for what is coming next. At this point, Chuck’s sanity isn’t being questioned because on the airplane he had all of his necessities. This will all change shortly. After the plane crash, the next major setting is on the island that Chuck eventually becomes in contact with. On the deserted island, Chuck is alone. Not only is he alone but he has no unnatural resources. Chuck’s sanity begins to be questioned after the creation of “Wilson” the volleyball. “That’s a search area of 500,000 square miles. That’s twice the size of Texas. They may never find us.” Chuck begins to refer to Wilson and himself as “us”. This is proof that Chuck has slipped into a different state of mind. A volleyball is an object. It is not the living breathing creature that Chuck thinks it is. This state of mind was caused because of his setting. Being on a deserted island on his own has deprived him of many things including companionship. Chuck Noland is a character with many layers that we see throughout the movie. The character of Chuck Noland has very few interactions with other people throughout the movie. This is why he decided to create a fictional character and treat it like a living creature that can respond and have opinions. Chuck had conversations with Wilson. One example of this is when Chuck was speaking of his test to commit suicide. “Do you have to keep bringing that’s up, huh? Ok, so it was a good thing we did a test because it wasn’t going to be just a quick snap. Would’ve broken my neck, or leg or my back. Would’ve bled to death on the beach, but it’s in the past. It was what, a year ago? SO let’s just forget it”. In that seen Chuck was yelling at Wilson, the volleyball, about how Wilson was bringing up the time when he tested hanging himself on the cliff. This shows that Chuck was delusional. In his mind Wilson was talking to him, but if anyone else was to hear Chuck talk to a volleyball, they would be convinced there was a problem. Chuck is being deprived of the basic human needs, as well as the need to be loved and have friends. This has clearly affected his mind at ...
