...ks down and cries. Shortly after this is the stage in the movie when Muriel, and the circumstances around her begins changing, although not necessarily for the better. The first thing that occurs is her meeting with Rhonda, and following this is a turning point in the development of Muriel. In her dance with Rhonda singing an ABBA song, the acting shows that for the first time, she is portrayed as HAPPY and FITTING in. For the first time she is a step above the four girls, who watch with hate and envy from the audience. For the first time in the film, we see a transition happening in Muriel’s personality and life. This change in circumstances is slowly creating a new perspective for Muriel. When she is lying under a tree staring at the stars, she is contemplating about her life. From these acting techniques we can see that Muriel wants to change, to marry and be a successful person. The quote, ‘do you think I can be famous?’ shows she is desperate for some confirmation that she can make it. Her eyes reflect hope and determination. When Muriel returns home, she wants to be free of her ‘old life’, and leaves her home again. When a guy asks her out, she acts with excitement and elation although the guy is the nerdy and geeky type. She believes that there are new opportunities being created for her, and her attitude towards life changes, as a result of the changing circumstances she is in. She also changes her name to Mariel, a superficial action where she believes it will help her in making her life better. Soon after, however, is another change in the circumstances of her life, another turning point that causes Muriel to reflect on herself. Rhonda tells her, “I’ve got cancer”, which shocks Muriel; she doesn’t know how to react. However, Muriel wants her to believe she can walk again, just as Muriel wants to believe in herself.
