In The Shadow of Man: Jane Goodall

...nd hostility followed the first fear and retreat period. Her first contact was either horror or delight. She was in the grass, laying down flat, and kept still. Jane was across from a giant tree. Sometimes the chimpanzees would change their minds to eat and go on if they saw her. Finally she had been spotted. Suddenly, a large male climbed a tree close to her. He was in rage, he showered her with twigs, and screamed at her, and climbed to about ten feet from her. He shook the branches and screamed more. He climbed down behind her. Jane could hear him breathing. A loud bark, a stamping in the leaves, and her head was hit hard. She had to move to sit up. She thought he would charge, but he moved on. David Graybeard started paying regular visits until the palm trees fruit was finished. All the oil nut palms do not all fruit at the same time. Soon, David Graybeard was back eating. Goodall didn’t stay to watch him all the time, we could only learn a little from watching a lone male eat. One day, as she sat on her porch, David climbed out of his tree and walked straight toward her. Suddenly he stopped, and his hair began to stand on end (they do this when angering, getting frustrated, or are nervous). All at once he ran straight at her, snatched a banana off Jane’s table, and hurried off to eat further away. Gradually his hair returned to normal. She hoped David would stop by for some bananas, and he did, off in the bushes was Goliath. As David ate the banana, Goliath begged for the wad, and David would spit out the wad into Goliath’s hand. The next day, Goliath again followed David to camp, and with much hesitation and hair on end, got his own bananas. David came nearly everyday, sometimes with Goliath and William(the youngster). One day, David came alone. I held a banana out to him in my hand. He approached with his hair out, and gave a sound like a cough, while at the same time, he jerked his chin up. He was mildly threatening me. Suddenly, he stood up, swayed from foot to foot, slapped the trunk of a palm tree beside him with one hand, and then, very gently took the banana. After observing Goliath, David, and William, she found that Goliath was a leader of the chimpanzees in that area. The National Geographic Society wanted a documentary film of the chimpanzees behaviors. The man they sent was Hugo. None of the chimps were upset to see Hugo. He was able to get film of the animals greeting, begging, and grooming, but he needed more. They witnessed a monkey kill but we were to far away to film it. During his last ten days, he got the chimpanzees to demonstrate tool using and making at a termite heap. Hugo left at the end of November and Jane was alone again. Hugo and Jane were kindred spirits, and she missed him dearly. Christmas Day, Jane decorated a small tree with silver paper and absorbent cotton, which she then placed a big supply of bananas around. William and Goliath were the first to arrive, then David. Sitting beside David, she slowly put her hand on him, and he gently brushed it away. She tried again and groomed him a few minutes before he brushed her hand away again. She had made physical contact with a male chimpanzee. Jane spent twelve days with William as he fell ill. He had a dry, hacking cough, watering eyes, and a runny nose, he’d shiver, and he even wet his nest. She couldn’t do anything for him. There were a lot of changes at camp, more chimps, and Goliath was losing his rank to Mike, JB had learned to dig boxes and wires out of the ground (so concrete boxes were put in), and Figar and Evered had learned to pry open the steel lids on the boxes. The chimpanzees were taking clothing, bedding, and chewing canvas and wood. So...
