Dorothy Day

...s a twenty year old women’s rights activist, marching in a suffrage demonstration in New York City. She entertains many lovers, has an illegal abortion, and keeps a second child conceived out of wedlock. Day converts to Catholicism, abandons her daughter’s father when he refuses to marry her, and begins working in soup kitchens. Inspired by the French philosopher, Peter, she begins printing the Catholic Worker newspaper and uses all the money she receives from its publication into soup kitchens and shelters for the homeless. Not knowing much about the life of Dorothy Day, I was very interested to watch this movie. The film stressed Day’s accomplishments and what she did, however I did not think it revealed enough of who she was as a person. Actress Moira Kelly does a wonderful job of portraying Day’s character, however in my opinion, the movie was not emotionally powerful. For example, we see Day convert to Catholicism however we do not witness any spiritual forces that lead up to that moment. Also, when she finds out that the Catholic Church does not support her and may in fact be against her, we see her actions, however her feelings and perhaps inner struggle are ignored. Th...
