Raisin "The Musical" Critique

...the ghettos of South Chicago. Mama longs to have her own home in a nice part of town, away from South Chicago. Beneatha dreams of getting a good education, and becoming a doctor. Ruth too wanted a better life a home. To look at one element of the play that supports my stating that this play is about Dreams, one would need to look at the character of Walter Lee Younger. He is a man of immense dreams. He wanted so desperately to invest his father’s insurance money into his own business. He wanted to make it out o his current situation, and raise his family to a new level of living. He felt as though this would make him a man. This theme “Dreams” is prevalent in this play that I cannot speak of any time in this musical that “Dreams” wasn’t reflected in someway, shape, or form. The actors, ensemble, and band, did an excellent job making this production come to life; but there was so much more that went into this production that made it so profound. The designing of the show was incredible. The design element of the production supported the acting and directing. The lighting, from what was seen, was done immensely. The lighting specifically catered to the individuals on stage, and gave a grand overall effect. The band was superb. They sounded like a professional orchestra. The music truly complemented every scene. Some would say “well, it’s a musical, it is suppose to.” While this is true, many times it is not done to perfection. The MSU Band played to perfection in my eyes. Being a Theatre major, I have worked on many shows, but this show will forever stand out in my mind. As a whole, ...
