“A Taste Of Honey” Own continuation scene.
...ook there he is! I better be off Jo, and I meant a drink for the baby, Honey’s crying so much because she’s hungry, at least I learnt something being a mother, you were always crying at me because you were hungry. Good night Jo. Helen leaves the house presumably to meet her latest man. Jo: Oh, I’m guessing her mess arrived. Oh so now they don’t even come in. Hmm, Honey, I think it’ll work, must be the best thing Helens ever come up with. Jo feeds Honey then puts her in her frilly cot for a quick nap whilst she goes to have a bath. She picks up her towel and makes her way to the communal baths. Half an hour later she hears a knock on the bathroom door. Geof: Jo, I know you’re in there, I saw Helen out with one of her recent fancy men, and so we’re in the clear for a little while. Open the door Jo. Jo opens the door pretending to be quite reluctant about the whole situation. Jo: So what do you call this, eh Geoffrey Ingram? Disappear for weeks on end then come knocking while I’m in the bath? If I didn’t know any better, I’d say you had intentions! Geof: I’ve only been away for a week, and you know that I can’t be here when Helen is. My only intentions are to care for the baby. Jo: Oh so now you’ve got a baby, I’m out of the picture is that it Geof? Jo storms out of the bathroom past Geof and into the house. She collapses on the couch. Geof: Jo, you know what I meant! Here let me make some coffee and I’ll go check on the baby, I expect she needs a bath. Jo: Mm yes coffee would be nice, I’m just so tired Geof, this is really hard and Helen’s off with her fancy man, I’m not cut out for motherhood…never had a proper example to follow ya know. Geof: I know Jo, I know. (Hands coffee to Jo) Well by the looks of it, he didn’t seem too happy with the old lady tonight…ey Jo, what you called the baby? Jo: Honey, you said you were going to go check on her, what do you need an invitation? Geof: She’s just woken up. See I told you being a mother isn’t such a bad job. Jo: Not a bad job? Not a bad job?! No…. I guess not, not for you anyway! Well I’ve come to love her all the same…she’s a part of me. Geof: Just like you’re a part of Helen. Jo: She never cared for me, never listened, there was always something more important than me, well someone, a man. Geof: I can’t stay long Jo, Helen might be back soon…I can’t stand her and she can’t find out about me being here. Jo: (Ignoring Geof’s last comment) I’m never going to be like that, I’m never going to let someone be more important than my daughter. Geof: I said I have to leave (Hands Honey to Jo) Take care of her, and she’ll take care of you. Jo: No. You’ll take care of me. (Hands Honey back to Geof) Ask me again Geof. Geof: Ask you what? What’s going on with you Jo? (Takes a step back from Jo) Jo: For my hand, ask me again and you just might like the answer. (Jo is slightly flirting with Geof now) Geof: That’s impossible, you can’t say yes…. What would Helen do if she found out? Jo: What are you so afraid of? I just want her (gestures towards Honey) to be happy, to be normal, to have a proper family, a father and a mother. Geof: Everything you didn’t have. Jo: Yes. Geof: Yes to my question that I haven’t even asked yet. Jo: Yes Geof Yes! Honey starts to laugh and giggle. Jo: See, even she agrees. (Meaning Honey) Helen: I don’t agree. They notice Helen standing in the doorway. Jo: How long have you been standing there? Helen: Long enough. So I see you still have your late evening meetings with your pansy boy. How are you my lily? Jo: What do you mean, still? Geof: Never mind that. Look at ...
