Goober was so emotionally distraught about what The Vigils had done, he could not even stand up for what he knew in his heart was right. Jerry Renault, the young lad who “dared to disturb the universe” by refusing to sell chocolates, had some guts. At first his decision to not sell the chocolates was simply another heinous assignment from The Vigils. But on day 11, things changed. Jerry said no, and continued to say no from that day on. Because Jerry decided to go against the grain of every student in Trinity, he was punished for it. Physically and mentally. He received the best of both worlds when it came to bullying all because of that two letter word. That two letter word had a lot of power, and Jerry felt it, but The Vigils were not going to let him get away with defying them and Trinity. “Nobody defies The Vigils, Obie...” “That’s what Renault’s doing.” “...and gets away with it”(109).
