...bend and mold to fit each other, not just the male. Though Bianca represents the ideal wife in Shakespeare comedy, it is Kate that unexpectedly finds love. In all three plays, Kate and Petruchio were forced upon each other, fought, argued and tested each others limits. Petruchio at times wanted to hit Kate because of her disobedience, but instead of a quiet mouth Kate firmly fights that, “If you strike me, you are no gentlemen; and if no gentlemen, why then no arms” (2.1,lines 221-223) The fact that Kate fights back against Petruchio is a new ideal in all three plays and is looked down upon be fellow characters because it is unheard of. In the end it is learned through Petruchio that rather then taming Kate and being the dictator in the relationship, Petruchio would rather just be her other half. In all three cases Love is found through the battle of the sexes, Kate and Petruchio, even though it always does not. Petruchio trying to attain dominance over Kate did not make her submissive, but rather enraged her to try and attain that dominance also. Love is learned to be something that is equally shared by two people, for the bond that Kate and Petruchio shared was that she did, “see thee in me”(moonlighting), and they ended up needing and loving each other. Though the plays are obviously similar for in the end Kate and Petruchio find love, and the overall opinion of women was to, “seek quiet in the match”(2.1,line 326), but the way each play came upon these conclusions was very different. The ending test between Kate and Petruchio was portrayed differently between Shakespeare play and the Moonlighting and William Ball’s version. Whether or not Kate would agree that the moonlight was shining, even though Petruchio and her both knew that it was the sun, was the true test.
