Prescription network providers work with pharmacy technology vendors to connect pharmacy management systems to their networks. SureScripts was founded in 2001 by the National Community Pharmacists Association (NCPA) and the National Association of Chain Drug Stores (NACDS). These associations together represent the interests of over 55,000 chain and independent community pharmacies in the U.S. SureScripts was organized to support a strategic industry alliance to promote true electronic connectivity between pharmacists and physicians, and improve the safety and efficiency of the prescribing process. With it unlimited reach SureScripts has even went as far as universities such as The University of North Carolina Health Care System in Chapel Hill which will enable nearly 1,000 physicians to send electronic prescriptions to pharmacies when working at UNC hospitals. The university will use the electronic prescription network of SureScripts, Alexandria, Va. Contract terms were not disclosed.
