Major vs. independent record labels

The home page also includes numerous links to pages on the website. A significant symbol that Columbia is a major record label is through its association. Under the link of Associated, you will find a listing and information on the many subsidiary labels and companies of Columbia Records. Columbia is the parent company to Sony Music, Epic Records, and other Sony affiliate labels. Along with the Associated link there are: Artists, News/Headlines, Audio/Video, Release Schedule, Appearances, Community, Cool Stuff, Win, and Shop. In Artists viewers get to search a catalog of Columbia artists to either visit their individual websites or find music and information about that artist. Audio/Video allows you to listen or view upcoming music from featured artists. Release Schedule has the release dates of music CDs and DVDs. Appearances allow fans to choose their favorite artist and find out his/her upcoming appearances around the world. Cool Stuff and Win provide fans fun incentives for being a fan of the artists by offering contests and downloads. You can also shop for music, DVDs, and memorabilia from the artists under Shop. Columbia Records has an “easy on the eyes” looking website through its layout/color scheme. The site has up-to-date information/news and everything is readily accessible to all ages. There are many fun features to make the website not only informative, but also entertaining. One improvement that I would make to the website is to tap into the ring tone craze. Columbia could offer ring tones of the artists at a discounted price on the website. On the flipside of things, The New No Limit Records, an independent label, is a good representation of independent label websites. These independent label websites do not get the same viewer ship as of a major record label, so to compensate, they must improvise and appeal straight to a specific audience, and in exchange will develop a narrow, but loyal audience to the website. The first thing I noticed about the New No Limit Records website, www.thenewnolimit.com, is that it was very animated and colorful to increase excitement and a buzz around the artists.
