The letter

...evening more than a year ago. He was sure that if he had done so, it would have killed the special sparkle she has in her eyes. She needed to be free. He knew he could wait for her as long as it would take her to come back to Paris. He was in love with her and there was no doubt about it. When he saw this letter with something written in German on his doorstep he knew it was a letter from her. He could not be wrong; she was the only German he knew. And there he was now, sitting at the table, in his kitchen, looking at the envelope, unable to open it. He was so happy to receive something from her; he had butterflies in his stomach. Maybe she wrote to tell him she is coming back soon, or to invite him to visit her in Germany. Even if he did not speak a word of German and if the war was raging between France and Germany he would go. He would do anything just to be with her. He had been waiting for news form her for so long. At the same time, there was something about the letter that was making him kind of nervous. He didn’t know what exactly. He slowly started to open the envelope making sure no to tear it. The war had been going on for 6 months now but it was no big deal. People everywhere were sure it was almost finish. Until now, it was a clean war, without any civil victim. Inside the first envelope here was another envelope. His name was written on in Anna’s writing. He carefully opened it and began to read her letter. September 4th 1914 Dear Paul, Since I left you, I visited so many places. I worked for two months in England as a nanny in a lovely family, I’ve seen the prettiest tulips in Netherlands, and I met an old man full of wisdom in Belgium who taught me the secrets of chocolate. The world is so wonderful. Make sure you never forget it. It has been almost a moth since our countries are in war. I was visiting my family when war was declared, my father begged me to stay and for once I listened to him. I guess it was not a good decision.
