...d spending time outdoors as to living in a town. I think her love for nature is a big part of her character and is the cause of her loyalty to the heron. When Sylvia came to live with Mrs. Tilley, she was young and immature, and had a feeling of loneliness that some people get when they live in a large, crowded manufacturing town. So when she went off to live with Mrs. Tilley, she was so happy to go off to a place where she wasn’t so overwhelmed by the large city and all the people. Sylvia was a very easy-going person, who just wanted easy-going surroundings, and an easy life living with the natural beauty of the world. One of her daily tasks was to go out and get Mrs. Tilley’s cow that would wander through the forest, and always ended up hiding in the huckleberry bushes waiting to be found by Sylvia. Sylvia did not mind the stubbornness of the cow. She thought of the whole thing as a game of hide and go seek and thought of the cow as a playmate. Sometimes in pleasant weather it was a consolation to look upon the cow's pranks as an intelligent attempt to play hide and seek, and as the child had no playma...
