heathers
...at’s when things change for the two teenagers. Veronica’s reveals her hate toward the Heathers and tells JD that she wishes Heather #1 were dead – and that was what happened. They manage to kill her and decide to let it look like a suicide. Before Veronica knows it, she’s dragged to a killing spree that was staged as suicide outbreaks among teenagers. Their next victims were two jocks who they decided were homosexuals – hence, the suicide. Their plan, however, worked the opposite of what they had hoped – now, more than ever, Heather #1 is more popular and is seen as a martyr, and the two jocks killed were even more respected for standing up for their beliefs. Veronica, at this point, has had enough and breaks up with JD who doesn’t take it all too well. He plots to kill her and the whole school – but she stops him and kills himself instead. In our society, we are instilled with the fact that “image” is everything. We not only have to everyday trivialities to deal with, there’s also pressure coming from our peers, co-workers, and family. Adolescence is a period of uncertainty and finding one’s self. In the movie Heathers, we see that there are various adolescent thoughts that are exemplified, such as: reflective thinking, self-consciousness and self-centeredness, idealism, looking at their parents as their primary influence, conformity and identifying with a peer group, and suicide. I remember keeping a journal and having a lock and key. My deepest thoughts and secrets were in it. It was a good way to let out steam and just communicate. As the movie progresses, we see more and more the message of self-consciousness and self-centeredness in adolescents. Shannen Doherty’s character was always self-conscious around Heather #1. One of the more shunned students was an obese teenager who didn’t fit the society’s criteria of slim and pretty, creating a self-conscious mind. Others were the geeks and non-Heather girls who only wished they could be part of the popular crowd. The Heathers were all about image and control and they’ll stop at nothing to hang on to their unchallenged superiority. Another adolescent thought that was illustrated in the film was that of JD and his relationship with his father. JD went through a tough childhood (from moving to one state to another which shows no stability to seeing his mom get blown up by his father in a building) and this we see in his character – mysterious and brooding. He was indeed the cool, bad guy who carried a gun to school and drove a motorcycle. However, the lack of relationship and true family foundation in his life led him astray. Thus, due of the lack of love and attention he go...
