We’ll call him Scott. I had noticed other bruises in the past, but just contributed many of them to sports. On this particular day, I called Scott into my office and confronted him about the bruise on his face. He began to weep and tell me about his father and how, in his father’s eyes, he could never do anything right. Many, many times, his father would come home at night and drink beer, become belligerent, threaten and hit his wife and push Scott around. Relief would come only after his father drank his way to sleep each night. Scott told me that he had been threatened several times about telling anyone the truth and asked that I keep it all very confidential. Scott assured me that he could handle it.
