I do not blame the clergyman for drilling Scoresby and helping him on the examination. The clergyman realized that the guy had no chance to pass the exam, and was a complete idiot. He knew he was going to fail, and was just trying to make his fall a little less severe by drilling him on some questions that might be on the test. He had no idea that Scoresby would ace the tests. Luck plays itself throughout the whole story. First it was the preliminary examination, and then it was the math test. Then a war happened to break out right after all of this happened. I think the man was destined for success in life the day he was born.
