Steroids are not just for getting strong, medical usage with these can lead to positive effects for people who may have asthma, kidney failure or HIV. Some people with asthma may be treated with steroids in order to help breathing, which in the past has been useful to patients recovering from an asthma attack. People with HIV can help their bodies keep from wasting away with the use of steroids. Many successful treatments have come with the help of steroids. They are used and can help patients bodies regain muscle mass, body weight, and overall strength. Other effects can stimulate appetite and improve a HIV infected person’s overall quality of life. Steroids also help people bulk up, relax, lose weight, stimulate the body and mask pain, thus improving a persons overall feeling on life. Steroids often give the wrong impression of the positives that come to them. People who take steroids in a competitive event such as track, will have an obviously unfair advantage against someone that doesn’t take steroids, and most likely will win the race against, say, a hardworking athlete. That is why most sporting organizations ban steroids because of the advantages given to the user and the side effects from them. The MLB currently has a ban on these substances but has not yet issued a drug testing policy. From the fans perspective athletes who abolish home run records such as when Mark McGuire did in 1998. Much controversy arose from this and he admitted to using steroids a couple years later along with many others. Steroids should be banned and illegal in the U.S. because of the negative effects they bring to people. Many side effects are reversible, but others are not. Effects include, acne, bloated appearance, liver damage, premature heart attacks, elevated cholesterol levels, weakened tendons, and premature stopping of bone growth, which can all lead to a negative self-esteem. Taking steroids may also cause an extreme addiction, with bad withdrawal symptoms. Symptoms may be mood swings, fatigue, loss of appetite, insomnia, depression and aggressiveness to others. Steroids can also bring blood-transmitted diseases if a person was sharing needles for the injection type of steroids. They can pass diseases on such as the large and deadly HIV disease. Through my research I found different facts and opinions on the use of steroids.
