The story then leads into the introduction of her husband Sykes who comes into the house and puts a big bull whip on Spencer 2 Delia’s shoulder while she was bent down sorting the clothes. Delia then jumps in reaction to this act thinking that this was a snake that had feel upon her. Her husband then laughs it off and tells her he knew he would scare her. The whip that Sykes throws upon Delia symbolizes a snake which is a symbol of evil. In the bible story of Adam and Eve, the devil, also known as Satan, takes the slinky sly form of a snake and tries to get Adam and Eve to eat the poisonous apple from the forbidden tree that God told them not to do. This snake symbol reflects Sykes character being that he is an evil man similar to the Devil with no religion belief or views who tries to bring Delia down in any which way he can. As the story continues, Sykes explains to Delia that he didn’t appreciate her washing the clothes for the white people and that next time he was going to kick the clothes outdoors. Delia being the humble person that she is, responds saying “Ah ain’t for no fuss t’night Sykes. Ah just come from taking sacrament at the church house”. This statement shows that Delia is the good who wants to do the right things in life by getting along with people and not causing problems. On the other hand, Sykes is the evil who doesn’t want her to wash the white clothes or do any type of work or good deeds. The washing of the clothes symbolies that Delia wants to keep everything clean, and pure like her character unlike Sykes who rather keep it dirty, and dark like the evil character he is.
