...rations. I agree with this part of the article, I feel that we were not as prepared as we could or should have been going into Iraq. Gordon quotes Mr. Dobbins saying, “Occupied people look first for security. If you provide security, they will provide cooperation. If you are not providing security, they will remain passive, uncommitted and will allow extremists to circulate in their midst.” I agree with this statement and feel that the people of Iraq have not necessarily felt secure or safe with this whole process. Mr. Dobbins also has three points that the Bush administration should do to help aid the process. The first being to speed the transition to a provisional government, second the American-led occupation authority should be replaced by an international government and third NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) should lead the peacekeeping missions in Iraq. I also agree with these points and President Bush has started taking action on these as well and has recently decided to do the first of these three points. The overall attitude I felt reading this article was that it is going to take a lot of time and effort to help the Iraqi people and it is just a matter of is America willing and able to stay in it for the long run. After reading this article I feel that it would take a lot of time and effort to get Iraq back on track and that this could even go to waste if the people aren’t willing to abide by these things. In the second article ‘How to Exit Iraq’ by Christopher Preble I feel goes hand in hand with the first article. Preble makes several good points such as how looking at Iraq today that the people will not tolerate a long-term military presence and that is what is needed for things to work, a long term plan.
