In other instances children who don’t act out may learn to view the world as a scary, and unsafe place. As they grow, children become more enlightened and more misguided by the television. Children become attracted to trying acts that look easy on TV, while in reality they are dangerous. There is no immunity to younger children of ages ten and below. Their responses are very high especially to threats that are showed. There is that footage about natural disasters that are announced. When visually conveyed, it terrifies young children. Older children are more frightened by stories of kidnapping murder, and molestation, especially if the victim is a child. These stories are usually less visual than stories of natural disasters because, fortunately for young viewers at least, these crimes are rarely caught on camera. A child watches 18,000 television murders before he or she graduates from high school (Tucker). Television has had a massive negative effect on children. Many parents are at a loss to what to do to protect their children from the intrusive TV. Television is a threat to children because it brings into our homes negativity that parents would filter in the market. Television is a source from which children gain information and experience different types of behavior. Overall television viewing time has a negative correlation with social and school achievement. Television viewing time is positively associated with social problems, delinquent behavior, aggressive behavior, externalization, and total problem scores. Children learn about life, exercise problem solving skills, and develop their own character by watching and experiencing the world around them. It has been stated that an average child or adolescent in the United States spends 22-28 hours per week viewing television (Palmer). The real point is that in spite of increased public pressure on the entertainment industry to become more responsible, commercials, and movies are not likely to change enough that parent’s won’t have to be concerned about the effects on their children. Parents education on these issues is becoming increasingly important, and any organization that is interested in helping parents should include media education for parents an media literacy for children among its important decisions.
