Roanoake Island
...call it baseball. John White is just about to leave to go get us supplies. I hope he gets back quickly because this winter is going to be cold. It is now about January. The winds off the ocean bring cold air to us. We are struggling with our food supply. There’s not enough to eat and there are many days when we are quite hungry. Some of the colonists who had been here before are teaching us how to hunt but it takes a lot of skill. There’s also the fear of attack from the Indians. The Roanoke Indians and the English no longer have great relations as they did in the first two expeditions. Manteo, from the Croatoan tribe, has been very helpful to us. Manteo was the first Indian baptized so we feel we are making progress in spreading religion in this New World. John White has now been gone for about two years. Most of the colony has died from the lack of supplies and the freezing temperatures in the winter and the burning heat in the summer. I think Queen Elizabeth has not let John White come back and has left us here to die. I never did think she liked the idea much. There was talk of trouble between England and Spain before we left England but we have no way of knowing if there is a problem because there’s been no communication since White left. His granddaughter has survived thus far. Virginia Dare was our first child born in the New World. Manteo tells us of the Great Bay and of his tribe who will help us but we are fearful to leave what little comfort we have here to go live with Indians in yet another unknown part...
