Rubin would wake up every morning and run twenty-two miles. The Hurricane found his true passion in this time in the Army. Mr. Carter returned home to box, but had an un-welcome homecoming. He was spotted by authorities after being home for a short time. Rubin was put back behind bars for fleeing from the youth reformatory. The Hurricane did his time and vowed that he would never go back. Now was the time that he would follow his dreams and skills, and become a professional boxer. Rubin began boxing and started making waves across the world. He boxed and won several fights; The Hurricane was born. He received this nickname because of his quick fist and a short temper. Hurricane received his chance at the middleweight championship against Giardella. Giardella was white, and a hometown favorite. Rubin arguably won the fight, but lost in a discriminate decision. The night of June 16, 1966 would be a complete turn in the Hurricane’s life. That night he and a few friends went out to the bar. At 2 a.m. the bar closed; a young man asked to take the champ home. At the same time, the Lafayette bar murders were committed. The two were wrongfully pulled over and accused of the crime. They were escorted to the hospital, where one of the victims told police that he could identify the killer. Police asked if Mr. Carter was the shooter; the victim shook his head no. Rubin was still convicted, and was sentenced to life in jail. Some time later, a young African American boy was living in Canada to help pursue his education.
