...epartment. During this time he directed six school productions using casts of between 60 and 120 pupils. In his last year at the school he also taught second language Zulu. Jan 1990 - Jan 1991 Greig was conscripted into the South African Defence Force. He applied, successfully, to be classified as a category 1(a) conscientious objector. He underwent infantry training without a rifle and was then used, rather sparingly, as a teacher running language courses for adults. It was this year that provided the experiences that resulted in him writing his first play, White Men with Weapons. Jan 1985 - Nov 1989 Greig spent this time on both campuses of the University of Natal where he majored in Zulu and Drama. Throughout this period he was involved in a number of political and cultural groups including Nusas, the United Democratic Front, The Durban Youth Congress and Durban's Community Arts Workshop. During this time he became well acquainted with amateur township theatre and protest theatre.
