...predominate in society would be that of women’s rights. The Lady in the short story goes through each day surrounded by barriers and obstacles, which hamper her ability to show her true feelings. Such is shown through the yellow wallpaper. The bars and the women behind represent the barriers that society puts on women each day. Women everyday had to go through the hardships that were associated with that of discrimination and rights. The true feelings that women had inside were unable to come out because it was not socially accepted. The Lady gains power and soon is able to come out. She tries to define herself as an actual person not some faceless figure. Through The Lady’s hardships she was able to reveal herself. The outcome led to the other household members forcefully having to accept what The Lady had to say. Myrtle could be considered as an excellent example of the struggles that can come along from relationships. In the novel, “The Great Gatsby,” Myrtle is going through turbulent times. Aside from being married to George, she is also going through an affair with Tom Buchanan. This proves to impose many problems on the relationships that Myrtle has with both of the men. More and more she treats George like dirt, although he is still in deep love with her, and falls more in love with Tom. As shown through society today of how affairs ruin marriages and create emotional tensions through everyone. Soon Myrtle becomes caught up so much in these struggles that it leads to her ultimate demise. If she would never have met Tom none of these problems would have taken place. Everything would have worked out fantastic, and she would still be living. But sometimes the struggles of relationships can prove to become quite troublesome, whether the two in the relationship even consider the problem. Both stories seem to compare with one another very well. Both deal with women who are trying to define themselves as what they hope the world to see them as.
