... live in the ghetto. While living in the ghetto, Elli experiences a strange dream consisting of an unusual bird with golden feathers and greenish-yellow wings. This is a vision of her fathers death, although Elli dosen’t understand at first, but when she does, she finds herself to frightened to tell her father. Another event that occurred while Elli and her family were living in the ghetto was the arrival of Ellis good friend, Marta Kalman, who came baring gifts of food. Although it is against orders, the young soldier, Pista Szivos allows Marta to give Elli’s family the gifts, seeing as Elli had be-friends the guard in her stay at the Ghetto. Soon the prisoners in the ghetto are transported to the death camp, Auschwitz. They all wait in line as Doctor Mengele divides them to the left and to the right. Elli and her mother are seperated from their Aunt Szeren who was sick a feeble, and who went straight to the gas chambers. After the division of the arrivals has taken place, Elli and her mother are sent for the preperation to enter the death camp. Once they had entered they were re-united with their cousins. Hindi, Suri, Aunt Cili, Elli and her mother form a group of five to maximise their chance of food rations. As the jews work through the hard labours of the camp, their bodies seem to slowly deteriorate as there was little food and water provided with long days of work. Even their menstral cycle ceases. In chapter Nineteen Elli and her mother are removed from Auschwitz to move to the Camp Plaszow. Here they are given almost more difficult tasks than back in Auschwitz. Elli and her mother are forced to dig up a childrens cemetry for their work, and Elli experience quite a response to this. After a long time working in the camp, they are eventually moved back to Auschwitz. Here they are reunited with Bubi who tells them about his roll as an interpreter. Here he also explains the roll of the Sonderkommandos. He also tells Elli that Ali is a member of the Sonderkommandos. Soon an opportunity to leave Auschwitz and work at a factory at Augsburg arrives and Elli and her mother both apply. Elli’s mother is chosen to go there, but Elli’s is denied. But she quickly sneaks into the selcted grou and manages not being sent back to Auschwitz. At the factory in Augsburg, the work is much easier, and the food and supplies they are given is extremely more generous that at Auschwitz or Plaszow. Although, one of the woman SS officers, continues to embarrass and frighten Elli. Her attacks and consistant and viscious. Elli and her mother are then transported to work in the Michelwerke aeroplane factory. Elli is given a pink dress and brown coat to wear where she is completely astounded at being given such a gift.
