...s during her Cambodian childhood, starting with being evacuated from her hometown of Phnom Penh. In order to protect themselves from execution, Loung’s father have told his family to be quiet and not to reveal their original identity. They could not let the Khmer Rouge know they were related to Lon Nol’s government before. Unfortunately, just like all the Cambodians at that time, the cruel Khmer Rouge forced this Luong’s family to break up. As half of her family memebers died of execution, starvation and disease, Loung herself was determined to stay alive. She miraculously managed to outlast the Khmer Rouge and survived what they called "the killing fields". The movie The Color Purple , had many tragic scenes throughout the story and hardships on the characters. Many terrible things happened to the characters of The Color Purple. The characters that were mostly impacted by terrible events and hardships were mostly Celie and Sofia. These characters went through a great deal of problems and disasters. Celie is the main character of The Color Purple. Her parents don't care about her. Celie is fourteen years old. Her father, Alphonso, raped her and told her, "You better not never tell nobody but God. It'll kill your mammy." He constantly tells her that she is "evil an always up to no good." Celie begins keeping a journal written as letters to God. She asks God to give her guidance because she does not understand what has happened to her. Throughout the story, though, Celie is the center of this community of women, the one who knows how to survive. My experience doing this I-Search project was incredible. I say it was incredible because as I read the book and watch the movie, I came to a conclusion that there are people that are living worser then we are. For example, in First They Killed My Father , Loung was facing many difficulties with her life and her family and I felt almost the same way but not exactly the same way. If I was in Phnom Penh at the time of the Khmer Rouge, I would be horrified and probably may not have survived till this day. I have heard about the Khmer Rouge and one of my family members were a victim of it and it was my mother. I have never asked her what happened in Cambodia because I didn't want to upset her only...
