upset shooter
...ion him before the shooting that he was upset but Paul was not sure why. He believes it was because he hand lost his computer technician job. Ratzman took the life of seven people whose names are, Randy Gregory, 50, James Gregory, 17, of Wisconsinites Harold Diekmeier, 74, of Delafield; Richard Reeves, 58, of Cudahy; Bart Oliver, 15, of Waukesha; Gloria Critari, 55, of Cudahy; and a 44-year-old unidentified man from Hartford. Marjean Gregory, 52, a 20-year-old woman, a 20-year-old man and a 10 year-old girl also were hospitalized. Moreover, the article mentions that he was a really nice guy even though he did suffered from depression. Furthermore, this church that Terry Ratzmann would attend tended to prophesy the end of the world. As you can see this is slanted both ways it has facts that show that the killer was apparently a nice man but it says that he had depression problems. As Birk and Birk mention, an effort has been made to alternate favorable and unfavorable details to show that neither will receive greater emphasis by position, proportion, or grammatical structure (401). According to Birk and Birk, we need to remember that much of our information about politics, governmental activities, business conditions and foreign affairs comes to us selected and slanted. More than we realize, our opinions on these matter depends on what we read or what news commentator we listen to (402). With that in mind I believe that my article is balanced because it mentions how a nice person Ratzmann was but at the same time it mentioned bad things about Ratzmann that probably had led him to his awful rampage. Some examples that show language that has favorable slanting in the article is that Ratzmann was a very well known by people because he would raise vegetables and because he was a churchgoer. Furthermore, the article mentioned that a neighbor who knew Ratzmann for about a decade said that “He was not a dark guy. He was the average Joe.” “It’s not like he ever pushed his beliefs on anyone else.” Therefore, if I wouldn’t have known that he was involved in the death of seven people I would have thought that he was a very nice person. He would go to church all the time, he was a great neighbor, and he was so nice that he even help the squirrels to get loose when they would get trapped in the yard. Who would have known that this nice man was going to kill innocent people? Therefore, we should not judge a book by its cover. I feel that by having favorable slanting in this article the effect on the reader might be that Ratzmann probably was a nice guy but he just had some mental issue that people never paid attention to and that maybe could have prevented him from killing all does people. After the article, finishes mentioning some of the favorable slanting about Ratzmann the following paragraphs has some unfavorable slanting which make him seem like a lunatic. For Example, the day of the shooting when Ratzmann Walked into the hotel the article states that he apparently did not care if he killed one person or many, who ever got in his way he was going to die? Moreover, some language that shows slanting that is unfavorable is that a church member said that “Terry suffered from depression on an off. When he was really depressed he did not talk at all. In my point of view, knowing that he suffered from depression I think that this had to do some what with the shooting, Maybe he was depress by what the minister had said to him and this is what made him make the decision of killing everyone. Maybe he just got too much into the prophesies that said that the end of the world was coming. However, even though his church tended to talk about the end the world he did not have a reason to take matter into his own hands. After reading the part of the article that gives unfavorable slanting the reader might thing that he was lunatic and that he was just waiting for the perfect time to let all his anger come out. According to, Postman and Powers a picture is worth a thousand words (419). Therefore, I feel that the picture that is showed in my article has a lot to say. Terry Ratzmann who is the man on the picture, has a look of an American guy with blond hair; he has that nerdy Bill Gates look, he is wearing a white shirt with a small logo which it cannot be seen that well but it seems it’s a shirt from his job of his church. It seems that he is having breakfast with two people maybe at his home with his family because there are some glasses filled with milk and some kind of food on the plates. Moreover, Ratzmann has a look in his eyes that he is planning to do something bad. For this reason I slant both ways because like I say he looks like a nice guy but at the same time I get a bad impression of him, it seems that he is craving to kill some one. This picture kind of adds to the bias because it make people have either a bad impression of Ratzmann or a really good impression of him. However this picture is not that easy to analyze it is kind of confusing therefore; some people might think that the picture is slanted against an some people that are slanted for. I feel that it is balanced because ...
