Showing his nobility by his willingness to help the people of Thebes who were in the midst of a plague, which can only be done by finding the killer of Laius. He was capable of suffering through the depth of which he fell from by finding out the truth of his origin and the killer of Laius. The "Tragic Flaw that Oedipus' had were pride and anger, in the story he proclaimed "The world knows my fame, I am Oedipus.", portraying the thought that he is of equal or higher position of the Gods, and when arguing with Teiresias he exhibits his overbearing anger by accusing tieresus and creon of killing King Laius.Death/demise, this element of the tragic hero is shown when, Oedipus finds out the truth of his parents and the crime which he has unknowingly committed; he then gouges his eyes out and is banished, casted out of Thebes. The the moral lesson given to the audience from this tragedy was that Oedipus was blinded by his strong sense of hubris (pride), which caused the gods punish him. This taught the awareness of a ones position, to teach the where people stand compare to the gods.Catharsis occurs when Oedipus gouged his eyes out after he has found the truth of Laius' death and the identity of his parents. Charles Van Doren is the tragic hero in the story, who was a man of great stature, that had gone through great suffering, had a tragic flaw and in the end met an irreversible Demise. Charles Van Doren was a Columbia English professor, who was from a prominent and well respected family, his father a Pulitzer Prize winning poet Mark Van Doren and his mother, Dorothy Van Doren, a novelist and writer gave him his "Larger than life" element, was given the chance to go on to a quiz show named "21". He was offered the answers to the questions in advance to rig the outcome of the show to raise the ratings, Van Doren refused and wanted to be given the questions at the time of the actual quiz show, showing his nobility. He was capable great suffering through guilt, he was ashamed when talking to his father about the quiz show in his parents' kitchen and also when in his father's classroom when he admitted to his actions in the quiz show. Van Doren's tragic flaws were, greed, fame, and envy; greed when he had been offered $25,000 dollars to be on the quiz show which he was given answers too. An example of his flaw of fame would be when he was being dropped off to the the college he worked at, he waited until the bell rang so he would be showered with praise by the students. He showed envy, envy for his father, he lived in his shadow for most his life and even within his family, this was his way to stand out of that shadow of Mark Van Doren's son and into the spotlight as Charles Van Doren, to make a name for himself.
