Overview of the Human Memory
...probably try to remember what the word looks like or what it means. This is a highly ineffective way of memorizing information. Typically you are very unlikely to remember something unless you make a conscious effort to do so. Another major piece of retaining information is related to the levels of processing theory. This theory suggests that deeper levels of processing results in the ability to retain and access memories. Humans use a variety of techniques to assist them with obtaining this deeper level of memorization. One commonly used method is elaboration. Elaboration is the process of linking two related things together at a time during encoding. This is also known as word association. After your memories are stored, they are available to be obtained. The process of retrieving a memory, most often involves cues or hints related to that particular memory. Another common way of retrieving memories is called reinstating. An example of this method is when you are asked questions such as, “What did you do this weekend?”. Before answering this question, your mind would quickly reflect back to the weekend and reflecting on activities you did or foods you ate.
