The race riots of 1965-1968 tell us that it was a very turbulent time in the northern states of America with which blacks were beaten regularly by white policemen for no apparent reason and therefore provoked one of the race riots in the Harlem ghetto in 1964. In the north there was segregation was due to money; whites moving to the suburbs and leaving blacks to live in poor ghettos. On average blacks received only half the pay of white workers. Many blacks lived in poverty and had little opportunity to improve their lives. Martin Luther King was concentrating on ending segregation in the South, his Civil Rights movement had done little to solve the discrimination in the North and the blacks where tired of waiting so therefore they decided to take it into their own hands for that reason the black panthers were born and the civil rights movement had reached a new level in the north. The Vietnam war annoyed many blacks as they were being made to fight for a country that discriminated against them as black people composed 12% of the American population while they were 23% of the American armed forces serving in Vietnam they saw as hypocritical, blacks thought they were being made to do the white’s dirty work in Vietnam. Black people weren’t volunteers into the army they were conscripted into the army by force. The race riots of 1965-1968 the northern states of the U.S.A impacted the civil rights movement in many ways. It tells us that black people at that time were treated unfairly and wanted equality from the white people, the race riots also tell us that black people weren’t afraid to stand up to their oppressors and fought if that needed be necessary. The impact of the civil rights made black people aware of the troubles that they were in and how exploited they were. The civil rights movement made the Northern States a safer and in the same way insecure place to live as there would have been many riots concerning this topical issue but in consequence would have made the government and all Americans white and black aware of the troubles in their own country forcing them to change the laws that kept the black people down. What did the black panthers aim to achieve? How did they go about achieving their aim? The black panthers were a political party whose aim was for self defense among black Americans…It started out as black Americans beginning to seek new solutions to continuing problems such as injustice and poverty. The party was founded by Huey Newton and Bobby Seale The Black Panthers aim was to protect the ghetto community from racist police. Their violent language disturbed many of the older campaigners for black rights, but it reflected a new attitude among young black Americans. The Black Panthers were part of the growing "Black Power" movement - a phrase originally coined by black leader Stokely Carmichael.
