Does music affect your mood?

... The first selection of music I picked was a song called “Jenny from the Block” by Jennifer Lopez, which is a form of r&b/rap music. I picked this type of music because I listen to it a lot and I always seem to have some sort of emotional reaction from it. When I listened to this selection I wanted to stand up and dance or learn how to break dance. Also, it makes me think of the inner city and streets with lots of cars on them. I think of gangs and someone just trying to find their place in the world. It’s amazing how many rushes of emotions, feelings and images you can get out of one song. The next selection of music I picked, was the song “1,000 miles”, by Vanessa Carlton, which is a type of easy listening music. The effect this song had on me was drastically different from the other song. First of all, while the other one wanted to make me get up and dance, this song always leaves me deep in thought. It makes me think of real love, not Hollywood love, but real truly, madly, deeply love! Once you listen to the lyrics in this song, you will understand what I mean. Next, for some reason it makes me think of the stars and the color blue. The song is kind of sad so I believe this is where my affiliation with blue came from. My overall reaction to this piece of music was that this song really calms me and it’s easy to sing, too. That is always helpful. My third and final piece of music is, “Genie in a bottle” by Christina Agulara, which is a type of pop music.
