...ite a shocking matter. For instance when Winston and Julia went over to O’Brien’s home for the first time, O’Brien turned off the telescreen without even thinking about it. Winston was taken aback by this and was so surprised that O’Brien had that power, which O’Brien explained to Winston that he has that privilege (Orwell, 169). Lastly, the telescreen, though the people of Oceania might be deceived, is everywhere. At the end of the novel when Julia and Winston are found above the store, “The picture had fallen to the floor, uncovering the telescreen behind it. ‘Now they can see us,’ said Julia. ‘Now we can see you,’ said the voice (Orwell, 221).” The people that are connected to the telescreen and are able to enter your thought process are The Thought Police. When Winston and Julia are taken into custody in Book 2 while looking at Mr. Charrington, “It occurred to Winston that for the first time in his life he was looking, with knowledge, at a member of the Thought Police (Orwell, 224).” Henceforth, the tools that provided the Thought Police with the ability to manipulate and enter one’s mind are the language of Newspeak and the principle of Doublethink. Newspeak is the language created by The Party that will keep any thoughts out of comrade’s minds that might question the motives or actions of The Party themselves. Newspeak invades the privacy of the mind because the language does not allow for one to think on their own. For example the Newspeak word, INGSOC, entails all concepts of science and scientific thought. The word prevents the people from thinking scientifically and wondering how things came about ( 26). Doublethink, the other thought principle of The Party. Doublethink molds the mi...
