Half a Day
...ld goes on to experience his first day of school. The day goes on and the narrator makes new friends. He also learns some new things, and plays a lot of games. They even have time to take a nap during the day. When the day ends, the narrator begins to look for his father and realizes that he is nowhere in sight. He then begins to walk home. After reading this story again, one will realize that it was not just a story of the narrator’s first day of school, but his entire life written as a “Half a Day”. There are many signs throughout the story that clue the reader in to the bigger story. The first sing of this story being the narrator’s life is, “…Here is everything that is enjoyable and beneficial to knowledge and religion.” Most know that school does not teach you everything you will need to know for the rest of your life. This quote could be a symbol for all the knowledge that the narrator has gained throughout his life. The narrator continues to go on talking about is life, and the friends and lovers that he has met along the way. Another thing that makes the larger story stand out is, “As our path revealed itself to us, however, we did not find it totally sweet and unclouded as we had presumed.” This is a clue because, when one looks back on their elementary school days, oftentimes it seems like those were the best days of our life. For a first grader to say that his path wasn’t sweet gives the reader a clue that he is talking about his life. This quote symbolizes that although we all expect life to be perfect; there are certain things we cannot control. After the bell rings, the narrator walks home. This “walk home” is a symbol for the rest of his life. It begins with the narrator running into someone he knew from earlier in his life. They exchange greetings and go on their separate ways. After the narrator walks way from the man, the road changes into a chaotic mess. There are tall buildings and vehicles everywhere. This change could symbolize a move in the narrator’s life. The ...
