A famous dome is that ofSt Paul's Cathedral, seat of the Bishop of London, which stands at the top ofLudgate Hill on the site of former Saxon and Norman churches. It was destroyed in the great fire and the present building, of Portland Stone was completed in 1710, the masterpiece of Sir Christopher Wren. Among many people buried there are Horatio Nelson, the Duke of Wellington and Sir Christopher Wren himself. For nearly a thousand years history has been made in the Tower of London. William the Conqueror began the White Tower in 1078 and further building went on until the 19é century. The Tower has been put to many uses such as a royal residence, zoo. Royal Mint and ,most recently, a museum to house the national collection of armour and the Crown Jewels. It has perhaps been best known as a prison.
