Platp: The perfect Union

...t’s look at some of their examples starting with “Plato: The Perfect Union.” Immediately the author starts off with an example of Proust. For most people, Proust is not a name we grew up to hear. Then the author goes on to talk about Greek philosophy of Plato, Socrates and Aristophanes. She quotes Aristophanes and his definition of love, he says “Each of us when separated, having one side only…is always looking foe his other half (Ackerman 843). This is for the audience who is in love and who have a partner to spend time with. People who are a little older and know what love is will respond positively towards this essay. The examples she uses evokes emotion of love and wanting love and wanting to find their soul mate. It makes you want to be with someone to share their feelings and spend your entire life with them. She talks about Adam and Eve and how Adam felt lonely so God created him a companion from his own body (Ackerman, 841). She uses Adam and Eve here to show us that all of Gods creations are in need of love, and we will not be happy until we find someone to love. She says that “love changes all he physics in the known universe of one’s emotions, and redraws the boundaries between what is real and what is possible (Ackerman, 841).” I think this true to some extent, which we lose all sense and consciousness and the feeling of love invades our body and we do not know what to do. The examples she uses and word choice seems to be directed to those who have a mate in their life. She gives the example of John Donne as he talks about a man who is with his partner and he sees a flea suck blood from her and enjoys watching the flea take blood from him as their blood is together inside the flea. This however cheesy it may be, is directed towards those in love. They know what it feels like to be in love, and all the emotions that come over you. For the people who do not have a mate it makes a person want to find one. She makes it feel as if a person does not have a mate, then he or she is at a loss and it makes you want to find that special someone. On the other hand the story “The Love Bloat” written by Andrew Sullivan speaks about how the love we want is this society is unattainable. He uses the story of Romeo and Juliet and how Romeo is in love with a young girl named Rosalind and when he meets Juliet he completely forgets about Rosalind and is infatuated with Juliet (Sullivan, 843). Sullivan says that is how love is and it comes and goes. He does admit that he just broke up with somebody and that is why he is a little bitter and feels that Valentines Day is just for those who do not have a mate and it makes them feel left out, lonely, and depressed (Sullivan, 844). This story is for the p...
