An evaluation of one of my first yearModules
... as a message to hold a meeting together to ensure everybody’s rule. Because I came from china, I thought I am familiarly about my county; I should be good at talking about it. Therefore, I said I wanted to do the speech. All groups have goals, our goals was to make a best presentation in our seminar. After we ensured everything in the first meeting, we decided to have another meeting in the next day to write down the speech together. Here, we came into a meeting with some expectations about it. We might have a clear idea of what the meeting was about, or we might be hazy and puzzled about what it going to happen. We might be looking forward to the meeting or dreading it; we might feel deeply concerned or indifferent. Another problem came out: I am not a native speaker of English, as English is my second language, therefore sometimes in our group meeting I cannot express my ideas to my group mates clearly. My group mates helped a lot; I learnt that when I am speaking, do not let others make me feel embarrassed about my English. Taking time to make myself clear is part of working in a group. Everyone takes an equal part, the slow speakers and the fast speakers. After I handled the skill, my confidence of discussing with my group mates has been improved. Reading is a very important preparing work in a success presentation. Reading required me to find out meaning in written text; literal, inferential and evaluative comprehension of text. Understanding the literal meaning of a passage is an important prerequisite to deeper understanding, but is not the end of the business of considering and using what a text has to offer. In order to make use of what I have read, it will be necessary to make sure that I can recall the most important points in the passage. At the same time, we were doing the internet research, my strong point was showing at that time. The strong point is my knowledge of country in our topic. I think nowadays, people are talking about china all the time, it is a hot issue. Nevertheless, in fact, the real china in their mind is not actually. They just heard of the thing about china from the Medias. I wanted to show them a true china. This is another reason why I chose to be speaker to talk about china. There was a Honda case study in our topic. Honda is considering the location of a manufacturing facility in china, we were asked to undertake a report on the viability of such a strategy. The opening-up of the Chinese market offers UK companies significant market opportunities and a potential location for production. The Chinese market is, however, a risky and turbulent environment. I should be aware of the problems of evaluating and measuring country risk. We should consider the basic characteristics of the Chinese economy. In addition, we should pay particular attention to the problems of political instability and the legal environment within which business activity takes place. We should be aware of the difficulties associated with the operation of JIT manufacturing systems in transitional and developing countries. The speech of my part shows below: Assessment of Chinese political situation China is officially a communist state, under strict government control. However, over the last few years, China has become a transitional and developing country, as it prepared an open-economy trade regime necessary for the 2001 WTO accession. WTO accession Indeed, Chinese government has adopted a number of liberalizing policies. For example, China has agreed to open up its distribution systems, meaning lowering its tariffs (figures) and increasing market access and foreign ownership for automobile companies. China also had to be consistent with WTO rules on Chinese foreign corporative ventures, law on foreign funded enterprises and patent law. These regulations are in place to increase economic stability and to prevent such mistakes as “spontaneous legislation” in the late 1990’s (FIGURES). Chinese law As a result, China has been forced to revise 2300 related laws and dissolve 221 administrative regulations as a direct implication of joining the WTO. Therefore, ramifications for Honda include easier access into the Chinese market. (Need to refer) In addition, currently, corporation income tax rates for foreign companies range between 7.4% and 24%, which would be attractive to Honda. Chinese economy The economy may still be seen as turbulent. For example, just 2 weeks ago, the interest rate had to be increased to 5.81% for the first time in 9 years, because of a surge in money supply. ?? However, these policies are trying to maintain stability in order to make China an attractive option for foreign MNC’s. Indeed, China has experienced significant annual growth rates over the past 2 decades. (Figures) China is an attractive option not only because of its cheap labour and material costs, but also because of its increasingly industrial labour force (figures). Indeed, the current rate of urbanization in China is 36%, and it is expected that by 2020 this rate will reach between 55-60%. Between now and 2050, it is predicted that 10-12 million people will urbanise annually. Additionally, the automobile sector is a fast growing industry. In 1999, the production capacity was near 2.5 million units. By 2005, it is expected to reach 6.25 million, an increase of 150%. FDI Now China is actively encouraging foreign investments (how?). The rapidly growing number of multinationals operating in the Chinese market (FIGURE) shows this. China is interested in attracting foreign investment from high-technology companies. Honda therefore fully benefits from government incentives, as it corresponds to one of these high-tech companies. The government also gives greater benefits to those who sell domestically (FIGURES). Therefore, this is one of the prime reasons for Honda selling explicitly in the Chinese market. After I finished my preparing work, I started thinking about the presentation. However, I have never done it before, luckily; I did speech in China before. Nevertheless, I knew I still need to spend more time than the other students do. I consulted with my tutor, he told me that I must have a clearly defined purpose, I must have clear business like objectives. Even if I have relatively little control over where and when I am speaking because I am presenting to customers on their own premises and maybe at their beck and call, I should still plan my approach carefully to maximize my chance of success. Moreover, think about whom I am talking to, because getting people together costs money-in the true business, so do consider carefully , be quite clearly what my objectives are In giving a presentation, and consider what message I want to put across. In other words, be as businesslike about the process. When I decide to give a pr...
