...r cause, and seek help for his people. The El Salvadorian Government both appointed and created the man who would prove to be their most staunch opposition. If the government had not murdered Father Rutillio Grande, the old man and the sever-year-old boy who acted as his companions, things may have been very different for Romero; and as such, different for the El Salvadorian people. This heinous act served as the catalyst that sparked such a dramatic change in the heart and spirit of Romero. This began the fight against the El Salvadorian Government to stop the repression of its own people. Many died for the cause that Romero now supported, but many also suffered and lived in poverty, dire poverty. The repression for the El Salvadorian people left a desperate people in a desperate country. People lived in the streets, or in the local trash dumps, with no real homes, unsanitary conditions and often no medical attention or food. Many chose to live in the local trash dumps because the decomposing trash, and often a decomposing body provided them with a small modicum of heat, and the trash dunes provided crude but adequate shelter from the elements; and perhaps even a scrap of food to eat.
