...ntly. Trujillo wanted the people to believe that freedom is slavery and the people in Oceania made people believe this to be true. Big brother wanted people to believe that freedom is slavery so he can manipulate them into thinking that they are nothing without big brother and that big brother rules them. Trujillo did this same thing but instead of telling the people he showed the people. What he did was he let people do as they feel for a short period of time; he let them kill each other and let the economy drop and become worthless. Then he exerted his power onto the people and the people noticed a change. The people noticed that when he exerted his power that the economy got better every one had job and every one was happy. So with this he did two things he got the people to believe that freedom is slavery and he got the people to love him. Big brother only wanted you to believe this quote and did not care if you loved him for it or not. One other slogan that big brother uses and so does Trujillo is Ignorance is strength. Big brother did not educate anyone in the city because he feared that they can use their power against him and destroy him. Trujillo thought the same so he only educated the people that were close to him he only educated the people that he knew would use their education to benefit him. If he taught any one else they can plot ways on how to stop him and they could actually do it. Big brother did not want any one in city to know what they were really doing. They wanted for the inner party to people the only type of people that knew that Oceania was really being brain washed into believing everything that the government has to tell them. Many people in the Dominican Republic did not agree with Trujillo because even though he did good for the people, he did it in a way that was brutal and inhumane. No one went against big brother because of the fear of being killed or the fear of what might happened; because once you leave you are never heard of again. “Until they become conscious they will never rebel, and until they have rebelled they cannot become conscious” (68). Trujillo thought that the people can never rebel against him so to him the people were no conscious. Big brother knows the people wont rebel because he knows they are not conscious of what going on in their environment. He knows that the people don’t know about his organization and the ones that do won’t last long enough to tell the rest. Everything that big brother has done is important because it can relate to modern society. Relevance to society Situations like the ones that happened in Oceania mirror things that are happing now in society. One thing that it mirrors is the war that the United States is having with Iraq. The government told the citizens some reasons why we are at war with Iraq but they never tell us the whole truth. They give us the story that we want to hear they give the facts they think we need to know, but they never give us the facts that are most important. America is at war with Iraq because of the oil they have in Iraq, America doesn’t want us the citizens to know that. They want us to know that we are at war because Iraq is bad and not because of the oil they have. In the novel they never tell the people why they are doing things they just tell them they are. Their government doesn’t see a reason why the people should know why they are erasing the past to match the lies of the present. They see no reason in them knowing so much information. This is important because the same situation in Oceania is happing to us. This is a look to what could happen to us if we don’t stay conscious and stay alert. This is a look into the future because things like these can happened to us at any time. At any given time the government can decide that they want to make us mesmerized and take full control of us. Hitler did something like this he took control of a group of people when they least expected it. No one that was germen expected that when they grow up or that their children will grow to hate all Jewish. This was a process that took time but it was a process that was like a ghost. It was a process which no one knew was happing until it finally happened and then every one that was outside looking at them was surprised. Big brother was a situation just like this one, they mirror Hitler’s achievements. To take over Oceania and have every one mind controlled like they did was a thing which took much time and thought. It was not something that happened in one say. Something like this could be happing to America right now and no one will notice...
